Roof Leak Woes

The fact is you have a wet spot on the ceiling. Your carpet is wet, the wall is wet and paint and drywall are showing the affects of water. The water will pass through these areas and as long as you control where it collects, either on the floor or in the ceiling. Iit won't matter if you have one gallon of water that has run through or fifteen gallons, the result is the same, in most cases. If the water is collecting in the ceiling and it appears to be spreading, it may be a good idea to poke a small hole with a screw driver or pencil or something that could let the water drain out into a bucket. This will obviously allow the build up of water to sudside and even dry out if the rain stops and the roof is repaired. When it comes to mold, the moisture that has penetrated the structure, drywall, etc. can be dried out with the use of fans and even better with an area heater along with it. Alot of the moisture will dry from the wood members absorbing it and dissapating it until it will all eventually evaporate. A moisture meter can be used to monitor a specific area. If in doubt as to whether there is mold, a certified mold technition will monitor that for you and some will do it at a minimum charge or no charge knowing they will make money on the repairs needed if mold exists. Carpets should be pulled up along with the pad in the affected areas to allow air the get to the wet areas for faster drying. If you are in doubt if there may be a mold issue, it is better to avoid the room and keep it closed off because of the mold that may be present in the air. Avoid breathing this contaminated air. The ceiling insulation should be removed and replaced or dried out so it won't keep the water from drying out on the drywall.
